The Tipperary Rural Travellers? Project promotes the empowerment of
Travellers at every level to negotiate and create their own solutions
to the issues of accommodation, education and discrimination.
The role of the Community Development Worker is to support Travellers
to develop and carry out projects within their community that enhance
a positive cultural identity and better mental health outcomes, and to
help build capacity of the Traveller community to? with a focus on
the South Tipperary region.
The worker will be based in Tipperary Town and Cashel and be expected
to outreach to Travellers in the catchment area of the Project. Some
home-based work is negotiable.
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT WORKER ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:
* Third level qualification in community development or similar
field, or 3 years? experience of working in community development in
the NGO sector.
* An excellent understanding of the issues affecting the Traveller
community.
* Experience working with the Traveller community or other
indigenous groups experiencing similar issues.
* Experience managing staff.
* Experience working with groups to address health issues within
communities.
* Experience working with young people in a range of non-formal
settings.
* Experience delivering training to groups within a community
development context.
* Experience networking at local, regional and national levels with
the community and statutory agencies.
* Excellent project facilitation and communication skills.
* Experience in project evaluation, and writing reports and funding
submissions.
* Excellent computer skills to include Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
* Current driving licence.
DUTIES OF THE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT WORKER ROLE:
* Work collaboratively with members of the Traveller community to
develop programs, conferences and networks within and associated with
TRTP.?
* Support Travellers to carry out advocacy work and community
projects in the Traveller community.
* Develop the capacity of Travellers to engage more effectively with
statutory agencies.
* Liaise with Travellers in leadership roles in the development of
community programs.
* Support the development of Traveller youth programmes in South
Tipperary.
* Liaise with local regional and national community voluntary and
statutory agencies on a variety of issues and projects.
* Provide regular reports to funding bodies and government
regulatory agencies for relevant community projects.?
* To contribute to local, regional and national policy development
on the Traveller community needs, gaps and resilience and culturally
appropriate practices.
* Oversee community development projects and fulfilling reporting
roles.
* Evaluate identified programmes within the TRTP.
* Attend regular staff meetings.
* Carry out any other duties as identified by the Project
Co-ordinator of Tipperary Rural Traveller Project.
